The UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Kingdom’s Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
The MoU aims to exchange information, knowledge, expertise and research in the energy sector and to promote the important role that the energy sector plays in sustainable development at local and international levels.
The signing ceremony was attended by Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, at the office building of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure in Abu Dhabi.
The MoU was agreed between Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Infrastructure for Energy and Petroleum, and Grant Schapps, UK Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. Signed in the presence of representatives of officials from both countries.
The MoU aims to strengthen strategic and technical cooperation in the energy sector to develop renewable energy technologies, including regulatory frameworks and incentives. In addition to environmentally sustainable transportation, electric vehicles, sustainable alternative transportation fuels, biomass energy projects, waste-to-energy, carbon capture, utilization and storage projects, the two parties will also strengthen cooperation in smart grids and related technologies.
The memorandum also highlights cooperation between the two sides in peaceful nuclear energy and related policies and technologies, low-carbon hydrogen energy, exchange of information, knowledge and experience, holding high-level meetings to discuss and consider issues of mutual benefit, and strengthening cooperation in the field of clean and renewable energy . , and organizes seminars for industry-related events.
The MoU also includes both parties’ commitment to sustainable development in implementing energy, science and technology policies, taking into account economic, social and environmental aspects of climate change.
It also documents their commitment to investment, trade and market access opportunities in the energy sector, as well as the sustainable development of energy resources, and encourages more cooperation between private sector and industrial entities to explore more business opportunities.
The UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure then explained that given the mutual interests of the two countries, the MOU is significant as it will help them implement energy policies that provide low-carbon, secure and sustainable energy supplies at affordable prices.
He emphasized that both countries recognize the importance of improving energy efficiency and decarbonization, as well as developing renewable energy technologies to help achieve zero-carbon emissions by 2050.
Al Mazrouei further highlighted the key role played by the UAE and the UK in laying the groundwork for climate action as the UAE prepares to host the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) and given the outcome of COP 26 in the UK. He also highlighted their role in implementing and supporting the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Paris Agreement and the 2050 net-zero emissions target.
The Minister commended that the bilateral relations between the two friendly countries have grown considerably over the past few years, thanks to the support, mutual trust, respect and common interests of the wise leadership of the two countries. He then noted that the MOU reflects the historical relationship between the UAE and the UK in various fields, including a close partnership in the energy sector, which is the main pillar of the national economy. Al Mazrouei added that the partnership helps shape the transition to clean, renewable energy and supports the two countries’ approach to launching projects and initiatives to ensure the implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change, with the UAE among the first approve. He further said that the MOU opens a broad horizon for growth and development as part of both countries’ efforts to diversify their energy mix, rely on clean energy, and forge more partnerships to capitalize on opportunities associated with global leadership. two countries.
