Atalanta beat Salernitana by eight points in Serie A

[ad_1]

Atalanta beat Salernitana 8-2 on Sunday to become the first side to score eight goals in a Serie A game since Inter Milan in 1996.

Ademola Lookman joined six other players to score twice for Atalanta, who are three points clear of sixth place in the Champions League.

Jeremy Boga gave Atalanta an early lead with his first goal for the club since signing from Sassuolo last season.

Boulaye Dia equalized for Salernitana, but Lookman’s penalty put the hosts back in the lead. Giorgio Scalvini, Teun Koopmeiners – who rebounded from the penalty – and Rasmus Hojlund added more before half-time.

Lookman netted again in the 54th minute before Hans Nicolusi Cavillia pulled one back for Salernitana. Ederson scored Atalanta’s seventh goal and Nadir Zotia completed the rout.

Atalanta are level on points with Lazio, who won 2-0 at Sassuolo after recovering from captain Ciro Immobile’s injury earlier in the day.

Mattia Zaccagni opened the scoring just before the break, converting a penalty awarded by Sassuolo defender Jeremy Toljan after receiving the ball from a corner.

Felipe Anderson netted Lazio second in stoppage time to stay fifth, keeping distance from third-placed Juventus and Inter Milan and four points behind champions AC Milan.

Maurizio Sarri’s side took advantage of second-placed Milan’s 2-2 draw with Lecce, with Juventus beaten 5-1 on Friday by Napoli, who sit at the top with a healthy nine points advantage Top of the list.

Lazio will face Milan at home next weekend, and Immobile was replaced early due to discomfort in his right thigh, which is still in doubt.

It was a fresh blow for the 32-year-old forward, who has missed several games this season with a left thigh problem.

Sassuolo remained mired, dropping to 17th after their sixth defeat in seven games.

Angola striker Mbala Nzola’s ninth goal of the season gave Spezia a 1-0 win in Turin, extending their unbeaten streak to five games and pulling them out of the relegation zone.

Udinese lost 1-2 to Bologna at home and have not won in the past 10 games.

Roma host Fiorentina later on Sunday.
