President of Kazakhstan attends Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week summit

Addressing event participants, Tokayev thanked the President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, for hosting a major international event to address pressing issues at the global level.

Tokayev argues that measures to combat climate change should not come at the expense of development or modernization — these processes should occur simultaneously.

“We want the international community to increase its contribution to climate change financing. That’s why today’s meeting is so important. Kazakhstan made a long-term commitment to become carbon neutral. In fact, Kazakhstan was the first country to ratify the Paris Agreement One. Following this, the country has developed an ambitious but well-thought-out policy aimed at diversifying its economy and promoting renewable energy and sustainable technologies,” the president said.

The President spoke about prospects for the development of renewable and alternative energy sources in Kazakhstan.

“The abundance of wind and sunlight, as well as the size of the country, can make Kazakhstan a leader in this field, able to contribute to global climate protection efforts. In this regard, Kazakhstan is improving the regulatory framework to create the best conditions for investors. Attractive conditions. The country plans to introduce 6.5 GW of renewable energy by 2035. Green hydrogen is another promising area. International experts believe that Kazakhstan can become one of the world’s largest exporters of hydrogen,” Tokayev said.

The President emphasized the importance of utilizing nuclear energy as one of the significant sources that emits the least amount of greenhouse gases.

“Kazakhstan is the world’s largest producer of uranium. China produces nuclear fuel components domestically and has sufficient capacity to promote the safe use of nuclear energy. In our view, this is a very promising area of ​​regional and global trade and investment,” the President Say.

Tokayev said that afforestation is an important part of climate change mitigation strategies. Kazakhstan joined the Declaration on Forests and Land Use adopted by the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) Glasgow. In addition, the country has launched a major project to plant 2 billion trees by 2025. 282 million trees were planted last year and a further 410 million are expected to be planted this year.

The President reiterated that Kazakhstan is the seventh largest food producer in the world and intends to use its agricultural potential to contribute to global food security.

“Kazakhstan is cooperating with the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to provide wheat flour to the people of Afghanistan as humanitarian aid. In this context, I call for active cooperation with the Islamic Organization for Food Security, Help emerging countries ensure food security,” the president said.

Tokayev encouraged summit participants to implement green projects, mobilize ESG (environmental, social and governance) investments, and work together to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
