Nearly eight in 10 people (79%) in the UAE want their family and friends to spend less time on their phones when they are together, according to communications agency duke+mir’s Life and Technology Report 2023.

Furthermore, 40% of the country’s residents believe that they have a problem with their excessive mobile phone use and would like to use less.

YouGov polled more than 1,000 people across the UAE, asking them their views on a range of lifestyle and technology issues, with the aim of learning more about the attitudes and behavior of the people in the country.

One of the biggest findings is that 70% of UAE respondents believe that since 2020 it has become more difficult to separate work and personal life due to technology. Since the emergence of Covid-19, the adoption of different remote technologies to enable us to work seems to have distorted the work-life balance.

Jonathan Ivan-Duke, co-founder and partner at duke+mir, said: “People in the UAE find it difficult to balance the way they use technology, whether it’s at work, at home or out with friends and family. We prioritize use mobile phone [over] People sit in front of us. These data suggest that we need to develop better ways to control our use of technology, and perhaps learn to enjoy face-to-face interactions more. “

Other key findings of the report include:

  • Nearly half (48%) of Emiratis surveyed said they spend too much time on their mobile phones and would like to use less time.
  • Large proportions of the Arab diaspora (48%), Westerners (38%) and Asian diaspora (36%) also want to reduce mobile phone use.
  • 76% of Emiratis experience frustration with apps or websites on a monthly basis, with over a third experiencing app/website issues on a daily basis.
