India’s SS Rajamouli lived the kind of week that filmmakers rarely allow themselves to fantasize about.
Last Monday, his crossover sensation deposit reserve ratio turned Los Angeles’ gigantic TCL Chinese IMAX into a dance party, Hundreds of spectators rush to the screen. Rajamouli’s Epic Musical Tuesday won the golden globe Winner of Best Original Song, beating out unknowns like Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Lady Gaga.Later this week, directors like steven spielberg and James Cameron Ingratiate yourself with the filmmaker, popularly known as “SSR,” by praising him in public.
“I can’t put into words the excitement we’re having,” Rajamouli, 49, told EW’s Awardist podcast (you can listen to the full episode below). “That’s why I make films—to extract that joy and bring that joy to the audience.”

In a wide-ranging conversation, the director talked about his own favorite films, how he edits action sequences, and his preference for screenwriting over other stages of production. Rajamuri also addressed a question on Hollywood’s mind: Will he come to America to make a film?
“I think it’s the dream of every filmmaker in the world to make a film in Hollywood,” he said. “I am no exception. I am open to experimentation.”
However, he also admitted that he was “a little confused” by the decision. At home, Rajamouli enjoys the final cut and unusual creativity: “In India, I’m a dictator. No one tells me how to make a movie.” Modestly, he speculates that a Hollywood project might be an opportunity for co-credit. “Very likely, my first step will be to work with someone,” he said.

Also on this week’s podcast, EW’s Clark Collis talks to the stars Olivia Colman and director Sam Mendes Regarding their recent collaboration, Empire of Light, an early ’80s British drama based largely on Mendes’ childhood memories of watching movies.after making movies like downpour, ghost and 1917, Mendes seems to be pivoting toward a more personal register, a pivot that feels special. “If Sam asked us to do it, every single member of the cast and crew would have jumped off the cliff with him,” Coleman said.
