A man claimed to be an employee of the Abu Dhabi royal family and defrauded a luxury hotel in the capital by issuing a bill of Rs 3.5 lakh before committing a disappearance. He lived in the Lila Palace Hotel in Beijing for four months under a false identity.

Leela Palace management filed a complaint with Delhi Police on Saturday (Jan 14) against Mohammad Sharif, who has been charged with fraud and theft.

When Sharif checked into the hotel on Aug. 1, he told staff he was a resident of the UAE and worked closely with Sheikh Farah bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the Abu Dhabi royal family. According to Sheikh Falah’s Twitter account, he is the chairman of the Ghantoot Racing and Polo Club.

Sharif reportedly said he had worked with Sheikh Farah and traveled in India. He even submitted a business card, a UAE resident card and other documents to corroborate his story. In addition, he took the time to chat with the hotel staff about his life in the UAE. But when he left the hotel on November 20, he even stole valuables from the room, including silver cutlery and a pearl tray.

News reports said police suspected his papers were fake and were investigating. They are searching CCTV footage to confirm the man’s identity.

During his two-and-a-half-month stay, Sharif paid a bill of Rs 3.5 lakh for room and service, while he paid only Rs 1.15 lakh. However, he did not pay the remaining bill and gave the staff a check for Rs 2 million on the day he fled the hotel.
