An Abu Dhabi worker – whose right arm had to be severed after being injured in a meat grinder accident on the job – has been awarded Dh150,000 in compensation.
The Abu Dhabi Court of Appeal ordered his employer to pay him compensation for the physical and material damage he suffered.
The worker, who is seeking Dh200,000 in compensation, told the court he was on duty when his right hand got caught in the meat grinder. He blamed the accident on the company’s negligence and failure to provide proper safety and protection measures.
The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance found the company guilty and ordered it to pay a fine of Dh10,000. The company was also ordered to pay the worker Dh100,000.
The worker challenged the appeals court’s decision, seeking an increase in spending. He stressed that after losing an arm in an accident, he was no longer able to perform some of his duties.
After hearing from all parties, an appeals court judge increased the damages to Dh150,000.
