ABU DHABI, 20th January, 2023 (WAM) — President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has declared 2023 to be the “Year of Sustainable Development”.
The Year of Sustainability will feature a number of initiatives, activities and events that draw on the deep-seated values ​​of sustainable development in the UAE and the vision of its founder, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. heritage. It will also inspire collective action with a focus on environmental sustainability through a nationwide commitment to sustainable practices in line with the UAE’s National Strategy, bringing together all those who call the UAE home to work towards a prosperous future.
This year also aims to showcase the UAE’s commitment to fostering global cooperation to find innovative solutions to challenges such as energy, climate change and other pressing issues related to sustainability.
The one-year initiative is overseen by His Excellency Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister in the Presidency; and HH Sheikha Mariam bint Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed said: “Sustainable development has been a fundamental principle of the United Arab Emirates since its reunification. The country continues to stand as an outstanding example of environmental protection and resource management. The late Sheikh Zayed Yedder was a global leader in environment and climate action, leaving a legacy that we continue to follow today.”
His Highness added: “Tomorrow’s today embodies the UAE’s approach and commitment to sustainable development and its responsibility to safeguard the future. By working, striving and taking action today, we ensure a stewardship legacy for future generations, just as our as our ancestors did for us.”
His Highness also highlighted the special significance of the Year of Sustainable Development as the UAE prepares to host the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Climate Change Summit (COP28). He said the UAE is determined to let COP28 set a precedent in the collective global effort to combat climate change.
His Highness also invited community members and institutions to participate in the Year of Sustainable Development’s initiatives and activities to work together to lead the country towards a more sustainable future.
The Year of Sustainability underpins the UAE’s commitment to address current challenges and promote sustainable practices at the individual and community levels. Notable examples include the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Strategic Initiative, which details the nation’s commitment to promoting environmental protection and efforts to create thriving communities in which to live and work.
The announcement follows the successful conclusion of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2023, which saw the participation of leaders and officials from countries around the world. This further cements the UAE’s leadership in promoting awareness of sustainable development both domestically and internationally, and reinforces its commitment to address the challenges associated with it.
The UAE has long been a leader in promoting clean energy and building effective partnerships for the benefit of the international community.
