Brooke Shields revealed she was raped as a young Hollywood actress in “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields,” a new documentary that premiered Friday on day two of the Sundance Film Festival.

The former supermodel did not identify her attacker but said she met him shortly after graduating from university – she had known him and thought it was a work meeting to discuss casting her in a new film .

He took her back to his hotel, claiming he would call her a cab from his room. Instead, she said, he disappeared into the bathroom and returned naked to attack her.

“I didn’t fight that much … I just completely froze,” Shields recalls in the documentary.

“I think my one ‘no’ should have been enough. I just wanted to ‘get out alive.'”

After the incident, Shields recalled calling her friend and security chief Gavin de Becker, who told her: “That was rape.”

She replied “I don’t want to believe it” and has not spoken publicly about it until now.

The revelation — which echoes #MeToo revelations by Hollywood actresses, well-known and lesser-known in recent years — is one of several shocking moments in the film, which will be available in two parts on the streaming platform Hulu release.

The first part examines the intense sexualization Shields experienced as a young girl, including a provocative nude photoshoot at age 10 and her role as a child prostitute in the film “Pretty Baby” at age 11.

The documentary shows a young Shields being asked lewd questions by much older talk show hosts about her roles in movies like “Blue Lagoon” and “Endless Love,” as well as starring in A series of controversial Calvin Klein jeans ads.

After achieving worldwide fame as a teenager, Shields enrolled at Princeton University and initially struggled to find acting roles again after graduation, only to meet the man who allegedly raped her.

‘will’

“My personal message is to persevere and not allow yourself to be a victim of society or industry,” she told AFP ahead of the film’s premiere at the Utah Film Festival.

“I take pride in the fact that I keep learning, growing, working hard and loving what I do,” Shields said.

The film, which earned Shields a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival, also documented the media’s subsequent obsession with her virginity, her mother’s alcoholism and her first marriage to tennis star Andre Agassi .

It featured several of Shields’ famous friends, including Lionel Richie, Laura Linney, and Drew Barrymore.

Co-founded by Robert Redford, the Sundance Film Festival is an important launch pad for independent films and documentaries.

Also on Thursday is the premiere of “Justice,” a surprisingly late addition to the festival lineup that explores sexual misconduct allegations against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

“Bourne” director Doug Liman’s first documentary features the testimony of one of Kavanaugh’s accusers, former Yale classmate Deborah Ramirez.

It also included audio from another classmate who said he saw Kavanaugh exposing himself to another “extremely drunk” female student at another party, but was not involved in Kavanaugh’s 2018 Senate confirmation hearing. It took months of polarization before the US media reported his claims.

The woman, who did not want to be named, said she had no recollection of the incident.

“It’s the kind of movie where people are afraid” to speak up, Liman said.

Kavanaugh categorically denies sexual misconduct.

The 2023 Sundance Film Festival will be the first to be held live in three years, since the last few festivals have been forced to go online due to Covid. It runs until January 29th.
