Three Laois students were given a “once in a lifetime experience” after being selected to travel to Abu Dhabi for the inaugural World Finals of the Junk Kouture fashion competition.
Christ the King School trio Alison Dalton from Ratheniska, Emma Tuohy from Vicarstown and Orlaith McNamara from Timahoe created ‘Minima’ during last year’s transition year.
The title translates to “tiny” in Latin. This suit is made of over 100,000 tiny Styrofoam beads from old bean bags, medical bandages, and wire hangers. It was inspired by their favorite designer, Zac Posen.
It was one of nine Irish entries in the World Finals of the Secondary School Fashion Recycling Competition held at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi on January 11.
Emma told Leinster Express / Laois Live how it all went down.
“We had an amazing time in Abu Dhabi. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience. It was such a beautiful city. We had the opportunity to explore and visit Ferrari World, Warner Bros World and Yas Mall.
“Tuesday was a rehearsal day and we got a sneak peek at all the other crap Kouture designs from around the world. We met a lot of amazing people and everyone was excited for the day ahead.
“The days of the World Finals were blurry, but we enjoyed every minute of it. We saw trashy Kouture designs from all over the world, and some incredible performances. It was great to see so many of my peers from all over the world Interested in fashion, like us.
“Longford’s design for ‘Back to the Future’ won the World Sustainable Designer of the Year award and we and the rest of Team Ireland were ecstatic for Team Ireland to take home the trophy.
“Overall, we had a great time and couldn’t have been better for the crap Kouture who made it all happen,” she said.
