A man has been arrested for allegedly posing as a staff member of the UAE royal family for about four months at a five-star hotel here and fled with unpaid bills of more than 2.3 million rupees, police said.
On August 1 last year, Mahamed Shareef checked into The Leela Palace in New Delhi. He lived in room 427 for about four months and fled on Nov. 20 without paying his bill, they said.
Apart from defrauding the hotel of Rs 2.346 lakh, he also took valuables including a silver bottle holder and a pearl tray, police said.

Shareef was arrested on January 19 at his residence in Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka, police said.
According to the police, the accused registered at the hotel by posing as an important official of the UAE government’s “Office of His Highness Sheikh Farah bin Zayed Al Nahyan” and provided a fake business card.
He also provided his UAE resident card on arrival at the hotel, they said.
In a complaint to police, the hotel management said: “Guests appear to have provided these cards on purpose to create a false image and gain extra trust with the intention of defrauding and defrauding the hotel at a later stage.”
“Guest paid part of room charges worth Rs. A post-dated check worth Rs 20 lakh which was duly lodged with our bank on September 22, 2022 was returned due to insufficient funds,” it said.
A senior police officer said the man fled the hotel with valuables at around 1pm on November 20 last year.
According to the complaining hotel, “This appears to have been entirely planned in advance, as we were under the impression that by November 22, 2022, the hotel would have cleared the dues via the check he submitted.”
“This clearly demonstrates that Mr. Shareef has malicious intent and a clear intent to deceive the hotel authorities. This is a clear case of theft, deceit and fraud against the Leela Palace, New Delhi,” it further said.
