Rusalem — Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer is on a secret visit to the United Arab Emirates in preparation for a possible visit by Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Walla News reported on Monday.

Delmer’s main goal in Abu Dhabi on Sunday was to reassure its leaders that Netanyahu would rein in some far-right members of his new government and reaffirm in particular his commitment to maintaining the status quo in Har Habayis, the report said. It was a question that flared up again after National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir’s recent visit there.

While Palestinians and Arabs were outraged by that visit, the Israeli government is adamant that Ben Gvir was not violating the status quo but being used as a propaganda tool against Israel.

Demer was reportedly instrumental in negotiating the Abraham Accords, which saw Israel normalize diplomatic relations and expand trade with the UAE, Bahrain and Morocco. The former ambassador to Washington is the first Israeli minister to travel to the UAE under the new government. Netanyahu originally planned to visit many times before leaving office in 2021, but due to various reasons, he failed to make the trip.
