A blogger and her friend have been convicted of defrauding a follower and taking Dh153,000 from him after promising to sell him an expensive car.
According to police records, the victim reported that he had been scammed by a girl from the Gulf country who posted an ad on social media. He saw an advertisement for a low-priced VIP luxury car on the social media platform Snapchat and contacted her to buy a car.
She asked him to transfer Dh153,000 to a bank account she claimed belonged to the owner’s secretary. He transferred the money to this account, which actually belonged to a friend of the blogger. After the transfer, the blogger delayed delivering the car and dodged the victim’s attempts to contact her. Realizing he had been duped, the man reported the incident to the police.
The victim provided money transfer receipts and text messages between him and the blogger. He also provided police with the bank account number from which he transferred the money.
The owner of the account admitted that she received the money and gave it to the blogger at his request. However, she denies knowing that the money was obtained fraudulently.
Dubai Public Prosecution charged the blogger with fraudulently confiscating the victim’s money. The friend was charged with possessing money obtained by fraud. The court sentenced them in absentia to three months’ imprisonment and imposed a garnishment amount and a fine of Dh10,000.
