This is the first time in the history of the Maldives that an incumbent president has participated in the primary election for re-election.

President Saleh, who is facing off against the party’s president and speaker of parliament Mohammad Nasheed, has so far collected 19,096 votes to Nasheed’s 12,005. President Saleh received 61 percent of the vote, according to avas.mv.

During the campaign, President Saleh stated that by cooperating with other political parties, the Maldives Democratic Party will have a future in Maldivian politics.

He has repeatedly said he will form a coalition with other parties in what he calls a “winning package” to continue the Liberal Democrats’ rule.

Saleh, 60, took office in 2018 for a five-year term and is the seventh president of the Republic of Maldives. He will run for the presidency in September’s elections. (Arnie)
