Dewa to commission 17 substations by 2022, report says

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) commissioned 17 new substations in Al Qusais Industrial Area 5 and Jebel Ali First last year, including 15 132kV substations with a conversion capacity of 2,280 MVA and two 400kV substations with a conversion capacity of 4,000 MVA.

Announcing the key achievement, Dewa said it had installed 5km of 400kV overhead transmission lines and 247km of 132kV grounding cables connecting the substations to the main transmission network. This is part of Dewa’s ongoing efforts to keep pace with Dubai’s prosperity.

The new 132kV main transmission stations are Al Barsha South, Jebel Ali, Al Furjan, Al Merkadh, Business Bay, Umm Hurair, Wadi Al Safa, Oud Al Muteena, Al Rigga, Al Wasl, Me’aisem, Umm Al Ramool, Al Aweer Powered and Ghadeer Barashy.

It added that the total cost of the stations and projects had reached about 3.2 billion dirhams ($871 million).

Dewa MD and CEO Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said its investment in transmission projects surged to AED10 billion between 2021 and 2024, with AED2 billion for 400 kV transmission projects and AED8 billion for 132 kV projects Dirham.

Dewa’s total investment in existing and completed transmission projects in 2022 amounts to AED 8.1 billion. This includes AED800 million for 400 kV transmission projects and AED7.3 billion for 132 kV transmission projects, Al Tayer said.

Hussain Lootah, Executive Vice President, Transmission (Power), said more than 33 million man-hours were required to complete the 17 stations, using the latest internationally recognized technology while ensuring the highest standards of safety and security.

“By the end of 2022, the number of 132 kV transmission substations in Dubai will reach 334, with an additional 29 substations under construction,” he added.
