Expectations were high for the sprint-heavy UAE Tour Women’s event, not only because it was the inaugural edition of the competition, but because it provided the peloton with one of the first tests of the fastest sprinters on the Women’s World Tour one.

SD Worx came out of the final 90 and into a headwind to take control at the 700m as Femke Markus and Barbara Guarischi led Wiebes to what looked like an easy victory.

Anniina Ahtosalo (Uno-X Pro Cycling) unexpectedly jumped off the field early, forcing Wiebes to start the sprint at the 400m remaining mark on the right side of the road.

That’s when Kool, shielded from headwinds for as long as possible by Franziska Koch, sprinted to the center line and unleashed maximum power to comfortably win the stage ahead of Wiebes, while Chiara Consonni (UAE ADQ Team) won the final podium.

Charlotte Kool is one of the fastest rising sprinters in women’s cycling. This year is her second full season on the Ladies WorldTour, but she has gained a lot of experience in her first season with the DSM team under the tutelage of former teammate Lorena Wiebes.

Following Wiebes’ transfer to SD Worx, Kool had the opportunity to take on a leadership role in Team DSM’s sprints. Going up against former mentors and teammates can be a challenging task, especially with someone like Wiebes, who entered the season as one of the fastest sprinters in the world and won 23 races last year.

Winning a bike race is rarely a sure thing. Stage 1 of the Emirates Tour Women’s is a perfect example of how unforeseen race variables, crashes and uncertainty about who is and who is not, and how teams (especially the leaders) will perform in the new season Freezing at the start compared to the previous year can change the landscape or the game.

The raw power might make Wiebes the faster driver, and it’s promising to see SD Worx so organized at the end of the race, mainly because this is their first season with a dedicated sprint team.

Many people hope that the DSM team can gain a stronger lead under the leadership of a phenomenal driver like Pfeiffer Georgi. Still, the DSM team showed an ability to change tactics in response to a chaotic finale. More importantly, they showed that they believed in Kool as the sprint leader, in her strength and ability to measure from final to perfect sprint.

It’s been an exciting start to the season for Kool, and it bodes well for the rest of the short races on the Women’s WorldTour. The DSM team may have lost the world’s fastest driver to a rival this year, but they have an equally quick finisher, Kool.
