A new 11-kilometer highway connecting Al Reem Island, Umm Yifeenah Island and Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street has opened in Abu Dhabi.

H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Member of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Office, inaugurated the Umm Yifeenah Bridge in Abu Dhabi.

It is expected to create a fast cross-city link between the two islands and Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street (commonly known as Salam Street) – one of the city’s main roads.

Designed to reduce traffic flow, the project also includes walking and cycling paths and bike rental facilities, providing the community with sustainable transport and the opportunity to live an active and healthy life.

The six-lane motorway, built by Aldar in partnership with the municipality and the Ministry of Transport, has a capacity of 6,000 passengers per hour in each direction.

Sheikh Khalid was accompanied by Mohamed Ali Al Shaurafa, Chairman of the Ministry of Municipalities and Transport; Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism and Chairman of Aldar; Saif Seed Ghobash, Secretary-General of the Executive Committee; and Aldar Group CEO Talal Al Dhiyebi.

“We are proud to have completed this landmark project, which reflects the leadership’s vision to deliver world-class infrastructure, enhance community welfare, and provide a business-friendly environment that ensures the benefits of the emirate’s citizens, residents and visitors. provide the best possible quality of life,” Arshaurafa said.

The bridge is the first phase of the Nakajima Parkway project, currently under design. It will link Al Reem and Saadiyat islands, Al Raha beach and Khalifa city. The larger network, scheduled for completion in 2028, is designed to include cycling paths, walking paths and sustainable landscaping that will provide views of the region’s natural surroundings and Abu Dhabi’s skyline.

To preserve the natural environment in the area surrounding the project, several sustainability measures have been implemented, including the use of precast concrete elements and arched causeways to ensure water flow and minimize adverse impacts on the mangrove wetlands. The arched causeway provides a channel for ships and allows fish and other marine animals to pass freely. Nearby Jubail Island is also planted with mangroves. As part of its commitment to adding value to the local economy, 85% of the company’s materials are sourced locally.

Aldar Group CEO Talal Al Dhiyebi noted that Um Yifeenah Bridge is another flagship project in the company’s urban development portfolio.

“It embodies our leadership’s desire to deliver world-class infrastructure projects and services in Abu Dhabi. We are proud of the role the company played in the delivery of this important project, drawing on its vast expertise in building significant and sustainable projects As a strategic partner to the Government of Abu Dhabi, Aldar will remain committed to supporting urban planning efforts and will continue to work with its public sector partners to promote sustainable development and quality of life in the emirate,” added Al Dhiyebi.
