New York [US]China News Service, February 16 (Xinhua) According to the “Washington Post” report, a white supremacist who killed 10 black people in a Buffalo supermarket was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday (local time).

Payton Gendron’s sentencing hearing was briefly disrupted when he was charged by a man in the audience who was quickly subdued. It resumed about 10 minutes later, with more people telling emotional testimonies of those who lost loved ones in the attack.

Gendron is serving life in prison without the possibility of parole, with judges and prosecutors condemning the evils of white supremacy and racism.

The proceedings in Erie County court were marked by tearful and angry testimony from the victim’s family, The Washington Post reported.

Gendron, 19, who is white, planned the attack for months, according to his online articles, which cited white supremacist conspiracy theories, racist memes and anti-Semitic remarks.

According to the Washington Post, he traveled hundreds of miles from his home in Conklin, New York, to target the Tops Friendly Markets grocery store in the black neighborhood of Buffalo.

He also live-streamed the attack on social media, saying he was inspired by a New Zealand mass murderer who espouses a similar racist ideology.

Erie County Court Judge Susan Eagan read the verdict, taking the opportunity to condemn America’s long-standing white supremacy and call on the nation to fight it.

“Let our generation stop it,” she said. “We can do better. We must do better.”

She told Gendron: “There is no place for you and your ignorant, hateful ideology. There is no mercy for you. There is no understanding. There is no second chance. The damage you have done is too great. The people you have harmed have done so much to this community. Saying too much value. You’ll never see the light of day again as a free man.”

Meanwhile, Chandron, in handcuffs and an orange jumpsuit, recited a written apology for his crimes, saying he acted out of hate but didn’t want other white supremacists, according to The Washington Post. Inspired by his actions.

The victims’ families paid tribute to their loved ones and condemned Gendron as a terrorist who destroyed their lives and caused panic in the local black community. Some cried, others pointed at Gendron and spoke directly to him.

Gendron pleaded guilty in November to murder and domestic terrorism charges, which carry a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole under state law. New York does not allow the death penalty, according to The Washington Post.
