Agra (Uttar Pradesh), 17th February (ANI): Leather Luxury is a small leather footwear business located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, northern India, producing around 200,000 pairs of shoes per year.

Despite being a relatively small business, Leather Luxury has exported thousands of pairs of shoes to Dubai.

Agra hosts many such small units which contribute significantly to the overall production of the country and greatly increase India’s leather shoe exports.

With international footwear brands looking to source their production needs, and many looking to diversify away from China, now the world’s largest producer and exporter of leather, experts believe Agra fits the bill.

For example, shortly after the COVID outbreak, German shoemaker Von Wellx announced the transfer of its manufacturing operations from China to Agra.

However, local shoemakers believe that the country’s domestic industry is already vibrant and the government’s push will further expand their manufacturing capabilities in line with the mission of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.

“I expect the Indian footwear industry to do very well in the future, maybe five to ten times better than it is now. If we get more grants and aid and more incentives from the government, I think the footwear industry will Rajeev Koccher, owner of Leather Luxury, said: “It’s more than we expect today.

According to the Leather Export Council, the main driver of the Indian leather industry is the country’s footwear market.

Apart from footwear, India also produces a wide range of leather goods including wallets, belts and other accessories.

Manufacturing units of leather goods are spread all over India and small scale units are frequently present.

India has traditionally been a major exporter of leather, although the bulk of the total production is used to meet the country’s domestic needs.

Exports experienced a sudden boom as trade and political dynamics shifted. Even the pandemic has had little impact on the leather industry.

During the first wave of the pandemic in 2020-2021, India exported only USD 1.49 billion worth of footwear. In the 2021-2022 fiscal year, this number jumps significantly to $2.05 billion.

Europe and the United States have been traditional consumers of Indian footwear, but with the growing demand for high-quality Indian leather goods, India has also found new markets in other parts of the world.

Javed Iqbal, regional chairman of the Leather Export Council, said: “Our export target is US$10 billion, which is five times the existing export figure. We are working hard to achieve this target. We have put forward a demand for taxes, duty-free (imports) Very little. So we’ve achieved a lot in this area.”

The Indian leather industry aims to reach the $10 billion export mark in the next three years.

Experts and manufacturers say the Indian footwear industry is expanding in scope and size as it becomes more competitive.

The infusion of technology has propelled the industry onto the global stage, where it competes directly with major global brands.

The government’s production-linked incentive scheme, PLI, in the leather industry, especially in the footwear industry, has the potential to pay huge dividends, experts say. They further predict that India will be able to overtake China in terms of exports.

At present, Indian leather products are catching up with and surpassing international brands, not only shining in the country, but also shining in the world. (Arnie)
