Abu Dhabi announces opening of 11km highway

Abu Dhabi has announced the opening of a new 11km highway that will provide a fast link between Al Reem Island, Umm Yifeenah Island and Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street, with the aim of reducing traffic and improving quality of life in the emirate .

A statement from the Abu Dhabi executive said the project has seven concrete bridges, including two bridges over water with a total span of 3.8 kilometers, and a six-lane highway with a capacity of 12,000 passengers per hour.

In addition to its accessibility, the bridge includes walking and cycling paths, as well as bicycle rental facilities, promoting healthy and sustainable lifestyles in the community.

The Umm Yifeenah Bridge is the first phase of the Mid-Island Parkway project, which will connect Al Reem Island, Saadiyat Island, Al Raha Beach and Khalifa City, and is expected to be completed by 2028.

The larger network will feature cycle paths, walking paths and sustainable landscaping, offering stunning views of the natural surroundings and Abu Dhabi skyline.

The opening ceremony was attended by Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Administrative Office, including Mohamed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Ministry of Municipalities and Transport The presence of senior officials including Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa; Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Chairman of Aldar; Saif Seed Ghobash, Secretary-General of the Executive Committee; Talal Al, CEO of Aldar Group Dhiyebi.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Al Shorafa said this reflects the leadership’s vision to enhance the quality of life for all citizens, residents and visitors in the emirate by providing world-class infrastructure, improving community welfare and creating a business-friendly environment.

He noted that DMT and Aldar have taken several measures to ensure the sustainability of the project and protect the local environment.

This includes the use of precast concrete elements and arched causeways to protect water flow and minimize impact on the mangrove wetlands.

The arched causeway also maintains a channel for ships and allows marine life to pass freely. In addition, the company sourced 85% of its materials locally and planted mangroves on nearby Jubail Island as part of its commitment to add value to the local economy, he added.

Al Dhiyebi said that the Umm Yifeenah Bridge is the flagship project in the company’s portfolio and reflects its commitment to deliver world-class infrastructure projects and services in Abu Dhabi.

He added that as a strategic partner to the Government of Abu Dhabi, Aldar is committed to supporting urban planning efforts and will continue to work with its public sector partners to drive sustainable development and improve the quality of life in the emirate.-TradeArabia News Service
