Nay Pyi Taw [Myanmar]February 19 (ANI): Nine Indian nationals who were victims of job offers from Myanmar transnational criminal syndicates were repatriated on Saturday, according to the Indian Embassy in Yangon, Myanmar.

“The embassy today repatriated 9 Indian nationals who were victims of job offers from transnational criminal syndicates in Myanmar. They left Yangon for Kolkata, from where they will travel to their respective hometowns,” India tweeted in Myanmar.

The Indian embassy thanks the Myanmar authorities and other contacts for their assistance.

“About 300 Indian nationals have been rescued so far. While we continue our efforts to secure the release of the remaining Indian nationals, we reiterate not to fall prey to job opportunities offered by transnational criminal syndicates,” India tweeted from Myanmar.

Earlier, in an advisory to Indian citizens, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had warned IT-skilled youths that they were targeted for such fake job extortion.

The Indian embassy in Myanmar said more than 160 Indian nationals had been rescued so far.

In early October, India rescued about 45 Indians trapped in fake jobs in Myanmar.

The information was shared by Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, who reiterated that India has been actively pursuing fake job scams where Indians are trapped in Myanmar.

The spokesperson further said that the details of the agents suspected of being involved in this work have been shared with the relevant authorities in various Indian states so that appropriate action can be taken.

Notably, similar job scams have been exposed in Laos and Cambodia. Indian embassies in Vientiane, Phnom Penh and Bangkok have been helping to repatriate people from there.

“Sincere thanks to all agencies for their continued cooperation in rescuing Indian nationals stranded in Cambodia,” India tweeted from Cambodia.

Bagchi further warned Indian citizens to cross-check before accepting dubious job offers overseas and to be extra cautious with such jobs.

According to reports, the victims were mostly taken illegally across the border into Myanmar and held captive in harsh conditions to work. (Arnie)
