Kathmandu [Nepal]Feb 25 (ANI): Nepal’s political coalition has undergone changes in the two months since it was formed ahead of the presidential election.

The Communist Party of Nepal-United Marxist-Leninists (CPN-UML), Rastriya Prajatantra and Rastriya Swatantra were forced out after the Maoist Center allied itself with the Nepali Congress and the Unity Socialists.

The decision to change the Himalayan nation’s political course following November’s general election comes ahead of presidential elections scheduled for next month.

The final consecutive round of meetings in Baluwatar, the official residence of Nepal’s prime minister, concluded late Friday with a decision to form a new coalition of eight parties, including the Nepali Congress, Maoist Center and Unity Socialism.

“Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ called a meeting of eight political parties, including parties outside the government. The only agenda discussed at the meeting was the presidential election,” Prakash Jwala, leader of CPN-Unified Socialist, told ANI by phone.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Dahal of Nepal proposed to support the presidential candidate of Nepal Congress to become the largest party in the Federal Parliament.

“From today (Friday), a new political journey begins. Let us move on; let us unite and serve the country’s prosperity, national independence, sovereignty and people’s livelihood. We can also work together in power sharing,” Jia said. Wara quoted Prime Minister Darhal as saying as he briefed on the meeting.

Eight political parties including Nepal Congress, Maoist Centre, Communist Party of Nepal (Unity Socialists), People’s Socialist Party (JSP), People’s Socialist Party, BJP, National Unity Party and National Unity Party participated in Friday’s meeting.

The Election Commission has scheduled a February 25 presidential nomination and a March 9 election.

The top leaders of NC, Maoist Centre, JSP and CPN (USA) met on Friday morning and agreed to restore the previous alliance – the one before the November 20 general election.

Nepal’s prime minister and Chairman of the Maoist Center Dahal is building a national consensus on the presidential election, although UML-N has been insisting that UML’s nominee will be president as agreed on December 25.

The weight of the respective votes of members of Nepal’s federal assembly and provincial assemblies will be calculated based on the electoral college. Members of the Nepalese Union Assembly (comprising the upper and lower houses) have a voting weight of 79 votes, while members of the provincial assemblies have a voting weight of 48 votes.

That means the Electoral College will have a total of 52,786 electoral votes. Since the final report of the latest 2021 Census has not yet been released, votes are weighted based on the percentage of lawmakers in the country’s total population calculated from the 2011 Census.

The person who gets more than 50% of the total votes cast in Nepal’s presidential election shall be elected as president. (Arnie)
