Space remains a shared resource for the world and the UAE continues to work with the global community to ensure that space is not politicized, a senior official said on Friday.

“As human beings, we cannot politicize space. Space will remain a shared resource. Going to space and being able to launch spacecraft, especially to low Earth orbit, is not an option or an honorable project.” Sarah bint Yousif Al, Minister of State for Public Education, UAE Amiri said that we use data from space on a daily basis, which makes it paramount to ensure the growth of the sector, ensuring that geopolitics do not enter into the advanced technology and chair of the UAE Space Agency and the UAE Council of Scientists.

To address and highlight the politicization of space, the Abu Dhabi Space Debate was held in the UAE capital last year.

“We’re going to have problems with access to space and the sustainability of low Earth orbit where we need to work together, especially as more and more spacecraft go into low Earth orbit, which is where most of our assets need to go. Collaboration creates tremendous momentum for emerging space nations, but also for private space…We continue to work with the international community to ensure that space is not politicized, that dialogue continues, and that there is mutual respect and transparency in the space sector across nations and nation,” Al Amiri told a briefing organized by the Arab Gulf States Institute.

Al Neyadi ‘an amazing man’

She also emphasized that there are now astronauts from different countries going into space.

On Monday, the UAE will send its second astronaut, Sultan AlNeyadi, and three other members of Crew-6 to the International Space Station for scientific exploration. The six-month mission will conduct a total of 250 research experiments, including 20 experiments by Emirati astronauts.

Al Amiri added that AlNeyadi “is an amazing man who has been developed from the beginning of the UAE Astronaut Program, trained on par with astronauts around the world, and has given us a new scientific and The site of scientific discovery. The International Space Station.”

Space Risk Business

She also noted that the space sector is a difficult, expensive and high-risk business.

“There are a lot of risks associated with starting a spacecraft design all the way through to delivery, and there are a lot of iterations in the development process. So partnerships become important to be able to mitigate the risks in some cases and be able to achieve the overall outcome and others. Space is Tough and expensive. You need to go into this stage knowing that there will be failures. It’s just the nature of the business and you need to have an appetite for it,” she said during the discussion.
