ABU DHABI, 24th February, 2023 (WAM) — The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation, FANR, has continued its regulatory oversight since June 2022 when the operating license for Unit 3 of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant was issued, starting with the Commencement, testing, critical stages, connection of the unit to the UAE national grid until the plant is ready for full commercial operation.

FANR confirmed that the operator, Nawah Energy Company (Nawah), has met all regulatory requirements to start this critical phase. The milestone follows extensive oversight, including regular inspections and surveillance, to ensure the safety and security of the plant.

Following the issuance of the operating license during the commercial operation of the Barakah NPP, FANR’s oversight activities include regular inspections using resident inspectors and the deployment of inspectors to oversee the testing process. Authorities continuously validate emergency preparedness and response systems and monitor the environment through independent monitoring stations around the plant.

Christer Viktorsson, Director General of FANR, said that the commercial operation of Unit 3 of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant is another major achievement in a major effort over the years since the establishment of the UAE’s nuclear energy programme.

“During this period, FANR reviewed the nuclear power plant in terms of siting, construction, testing and finally operation to ensure that the operator complied with all regulatory requirements to ensure the safety of the public and the environment,” he added.

Viktorsson noted, “FANR is proud to have Emirati nuclear experts who have played a key role in the licensing process and oversight of the plant since its inception. We are proud that more than 74% of FANR’s staff are Emirati. I congratulate The UAE government and its leadership have achieved this.”

Following the commercial operation of Unit 3, FANR will continue to conduct regulatory oversight and inspections to ensure the safety and security of the plant as part of its mission to protect the public, workers and the environment.
