WASHINGTON, Feb. 27 (AP) — The leader of the new House Select Committee on China defended Democratic Rep. Judy Judy on Sunday, saying it was abhorrent for Republican lawmakers to question her loyalty to the United States based on her Chinese heritage. and unacceptable.

“Unfortunately, one of my colleagues attacked Judy Chu, the first Chinese-American congresswoman in the U.S. Congress, saying she was somehow disloyal to the United States. As an Asian-American, I find this offensive myself, said Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, the top-ranking Democrat on the panel, referring to comments made last week by Rep. Lance Gooden, R-Texas.

Rep. Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin, the Republican chair of the China group and who appeared on CBS’ “Face the Nation” with Krishnamursi on Sunday, said Gooden was out of line.

“We should not question anyone’s loyalty to America,” Gallagher said. “That’s out of bounds. It’s beyond pale.”

In an interview with Fox News last week, Gooden criticized Zhu for defending Biden’s economic appointee Doming Wu, who was appointed by the president to the APEC Business Advisory Council. Gooden questioned Zhu’s “loyalty or competence.” He also suggested that Chu, the California Democrat, should not have a security clearance or access to classified briefings.

Chu, the Los Angeles-born chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, called Gooden’s remarks “racist,” saying the attacks on her and Ng were based on disinformation from right-wing media.

On Sunday, Gallagher said his bipartisan committee, officially known as the Select Committee on U.S.-China Strategic Competition, was titled “Constantly Distinguish between the Party and the People.”

“As we try to win the competition with China, we must always be careful not to overdo it,” he said. (Associated Press)
