U.S. announces $400 million in new security aid to Ukraine

WASHINGTON: The United States on Friday announced a new $400 million Ukrainian security aid package that includes various munitions for Kiev forces.

“This military assistance package includes additional ammunition for the U.S.-supplied HIMARS and howitzers that Ukraine uses very effectively for self-defense,” the State Department said in a statement, referring to sophisticated rocket systems and artillery.

The kit also includes ammunition for the Bradley infantry fighting vehicle, as well as an armored vehicle launch bridge for use when traversing rivers and other water obstacles.

U.S. not giving Ukraine information on targets in Russia: Pentagon

The United States has spearheaded the push for international support for Ukraine, quickly building an international coalition to support Kiev after Russia invaded it in February 2022, and coordinating aid from dozens of countries.

Kiev has pushed some items that its international backers have been reluctant to offer, including the Patriot air defense system and advanced heavy tanks — which were eventually promised — and other items such as Western fighter jets that have so far not been delivered.

Ukrainian supporters are training the country’s military to use the new weapons provided, and the U.S. military began a program in January focused on larger exercises.
