Oman, UAE sign MOU to boost environmental protection efforts

The Sultanate of Oman and the United Arab Emirates have signed a memorandum of understanding to promote sustainable development and promote cooperation in various fields related to environmental protection.

The Environment Agency signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment.

A UAE delegation led by Climate Change and Environment Minister Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri concluded an official visit to Oman last week.

Ways to strengthen cooperation in fish farming, achieving net zero emissions targets, mangrove planting and the UAE’s preparations for the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) were key areas of discussion during her visit.

According to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, Mariam said that the UAE seeks to encourage the implementation of environmentally friendly solutions to address environmental challenges, in line with its hosting of COP28 and its efforts to drive climate action locally and globally.

This visit includes a meeting with Dr. Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, Chairman of the Oman Environment Agency and His Excellency Dr. Saud Hamoud al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources of Oman.

According to the memorandum of understanding, the two parties will carry out exchange research and joint research in the fields of environmental protection, air quality improvement, biodiversity protection, achieving sustainable development goals, and compiling sustainable development progress reports.

The two sides will also exchange best practices and policies on environmental protection and pollution reduction.

Oman and the UAE held formal talks on environmental issues in Muscat on Wednesday.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed plans to tackle plastic pollution and refrigerant gases. The pair also looked at experiences in wind and electricity, in addition to devising the necessary mechanisms to activate research in both countries in the field of fish farming and marine fisheries, as well as exchange expertise and best practices, among other topics. concern.
