KATHMANDU, March 7 (PTI) Representatives of Nepal’s coalition of eight parties met here on Tuesday to discuss preparations for the March 9 presidential election and deliberate on a series of key political issues.

The working group, chaired by Purna Bahadur Khadka, Deputy Chairman of the Nepal Congress, included representatives from the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre), Communist Party of Nepal (United Socialism), Nepal People’s Democratic Union, Nepal Representatives of the Liberal Social Union Party, the Nagarik Umqti Party, the People’s Party and the Lastria People’s Union.

The meeting, which was held at the parliamentary party office in Nepal’s Congress, focused on contemporary political issues, including preparations for the presidential election scheduled for March 9, a Congress source said.

The upcoming presidential election is a face-off between the two former speakers of the House of Representatives – Ram Chandra Podell – a candidate backed by the eight-party coalition and Subas Nembang of UML.

Paudel, 78, and Nembang, 69, submitted their nominations last month.

Last week, former prime minister KP Sharma’s CPN-UML, Nepal’s second-largest political party, withdrew its support for Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda”‘s government after disagreements over backing Paudel for the presidential election.

With the support of eight political parties, Bourdel’s victory in the presidential election is almost a foregone conclusion.

The current term of President Bidya Devi Bhandari will end on March 12.

The total number of voters who elected the president was 882, including 332 members of the Federal Assembly and 550 members of the provincial assemblies of the seven provinces. Federal MPs have a voting weight of 79 articles.
