Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations

New York [US]March 8 (ANI): India has slammed Pakistan for raising Jammu and Kashmir issue in Security Council debate on women, peace and security, saying it does not deserve to respond to such “malicious and false propaganda”.

Addressing the UN Security Council on Tuesday, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, said: “Let me dismiss the rash, baseless and politically motivated statement made by the representative of Pakistan regarding the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. My delegation We believe that even responding to such malicious and false propaganda is not worth it. Instead, our focus is to remain positive and forward-looking at all times.”

“Today’s discussion is critical to strengthening our collective efforts to accelerate the full implementation of the women’s peace and security agenda. We respect the subject matter of the debate and we recognize the importance of time. As such, our focus will remain on this subject,” she added.

The statement came after Pakistani Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari mentioned Jammu and Kashmir in a Security Council debate.

In a speech at the UN Security Council, Kambogi said that terrorist violence against women and girls is still rampant and should be strongly condemned, while calling for zero tolerance for all forms of terrorism.

“Women and girls have always suffered disproportionately. Terrorist violence against women and girls remains rampant. This should be condemned in the strongest terms and calls for zero tolerance for all forms of terrorism,” she said.

India’s envoy to the UN applauded UN Security Council Resolution 1325, saying it was groundbreaking as it created a gender perspective in maintaining international peace and security. For the first time, it is recognized that women are disproportionately affected by violence and that their participation in peace processes is integral to building lasting peace and security.

Over the past few years, India has strengthened the normative framework for the women’s peace and security agenda, she said. Despite this, however, women remain underrepresented or even excluded in formal peace processes, political dialogue and peacebuilding.

Referring to Afghanistan and its ongoing repression of women, Kamboj said: “As this committee is aware, we have been emphasizing inclusion in Afghanistan with the meaningful participation of women in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2593 of 2021 the importance of gender and representative governance.”

“While supporting political participation, we must also focus in an equally holistic manner on women’s socioeconomic empowerment, including their access to credit, finance and technology,” she added.

She further stated that India deployed a platoon, a platoon of female peacekeepers, in Abya in January 2023 as part of the Indian Battalion of the United Nations Interim Security Force in Abya.

It is India’s largest deployment of female peacekeepers since 2007, when the country was the first to deploy an all-female formed police unit in Liberia. These initiatives reflect India’s intention to significantly increase the number of women in its peacekeeping contingents and our commitment to the WPS agenda.

She said India also supported increased deployment of women protection advisers to effectively monitor, analyze and report arrangements on fourth conflict sexual violence.

She added that terrorism and violent extremism remained the biggest human rights violators and a persistent threat to global peace and security. (Arnie)
