Universal Filmed Entertainment Launches GreenerLight Sustainability Program – The Hollywood Reporter

To move towards a more earth-friendly movie scene, common The Filmed Entertainment Group (UFEG) announced today that it is launching a new program called the GreenerLight program (the term for films when they are released in studios).

The new program aims to integrate sustainable practices and ecologically conscious foresight into the entire filmmaking process, from script development to production (including location decisions) and distribution. The studio also said the plan would include an environmental review of depictions of behavior on screen. (Similar initiatives have been taken by directors such as Kat Coiro, who Partnering with the non-profit organization Habits of Waste Use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic to display characters on screen. )

Going forward, every film approved at the studio will include sustainability program, which Universal claims is unique among the studios.

In a statement announcing the program, Universal Pictures President Peter Kramer said: “Through our sustainable production program, we have been working to reduce our environmental impact for over a decade. UFEG is now expanding its commitment to sustainability, It started as early as the development stage. Throughout the filmmaking process, we will use inclusive strategies to strengthen our sustainability efforts and continue to do better in all aspects.”

Universal said the plan was developed by UFEG’s film strategy team in partnership with NBC Universal’s Sustainability Division. As Cramer notes, Greenerlight is an expansion of the studio’s existing sustainable production program, which focuses on issues like energy efficiency, reducing fuel use, and donating food and set materials.

“UFEG’s GreenerLight initiative is the first of its kind and will lead the industry in helping inspire change on and off screen,” said Daniel Hinerfeld, director of the Rewrite the Future initiative at the Natural Resources Defense Council, which works with and discusses its ecological Initiative provides advice to studios.

The move comes amid other recent green initiatives in the entertainment industry, including Amazon Studios (which invested in Battery Powered Generator Company Moxion Power and use these machines in its production to replace the more polluting models) and Netflix (partnered with General Motors to EVs showcased in shows and movies).
