MADRID, March 10 (AP) Ford Motor Co announced Friday that it will cut about 1,100 jobs at its plant in the eastern Spanish city of Valencia.

The automaker announced last month that it would cut 2,300 jobs, mainly in Germany and the UK, as part of a “leanner, more competitive cost structure in Europe”.

Ford Spain said in a statement that it notified unions on Friday of what it said was a “profound restructuring of its operations,” even as Ford backed the Valencia plant as it assembles “the next generation” in Spain. The go-to location for electric vehicles. mainland.

The plant is the only one of its kind for Ford in Spain and employs 5,400 people.

Ford said there was no change to its strategy to offer an all-electric fleet in Europe by 2035, with production of its first European-built electric car starting later this year.

Ford Spain said in an email that the job cuts were “mainly due to the already announced discontinuation of the S-Max and Galaxy models in April 2023”.

In January, the Dearborn, Michigan-based company announced the opening of a new solar farm at its Valencia facility as it looks to become a carbon-neutral business.

The layoffs come amid a sea change in the global auto industry from gas-guzzling internal combustion engines to electric vehicles. The race to develop electric vehicles has sparked fierce competition among automakers as governments try to reduce emissions that contribute to climate change. (Associated Press)
