BEIRUT, March 12 (AP) — Israel fired missiles at a western Syrian city on Sunday, wounding three Syrian soldiers, Syrian state media reported.

The official news agency SANA, citing military sources, said the missile was fired at Masyaf in Hama province at dawn.

Syrian air defenses shot down several of them.

No deaths were reported. Photos from SANA show the missile may have landed on farmland.

There was no immediate comment from Israel, which has carried out hundreds of attacks on targets in Syria over the years. However, it rarely acknowledges or discusses such operations.

It said it was targeting militia bases allied with Iran, notably the militant Hezbollah group in Lebanon. Hezbollah has deployed fighters in Syria and is fighting alongside Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government forces.

Israel also said it targeted weapons believed to be destined for militias.

Israel had previously attacked Masyaf in May 2022 and August 2022, killing five and injuring two.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor based in the UK, the attack targeted weapons depots belonging to Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guards and Iran-backed militias. (Associated Press)
