Abu Dhabi to host Regional Meeting of WMO Regional Association II (Asia)

ABU DHABI – UAE – UAE National Center of Meteorology (NCM) to host the WMO Regional Association II (Asia) Regional Conference (RECO) in Abu Dhabi, 13-16 March 2023.

RECO aims to provide a forum for National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) in RA II to address emerging issues and challenges, strengthen regional cooperation and strengthen partnerships to implement WMO resolutions and decisions in line with regional priorities.

The meeting will be in a mixed format with 150 participants, including permanent representatives of WMO Members from Asia, as well as key representatives from the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia Committee (ESCWA).

RECO will open on March 13 with a day of high-level meetings focused on the UN’s Early Warning for All initiative. HE Petri Taalas, Secretary-General of WMO, HE Dr Abdulla Al Mandous, Director-General of the National Center of Meteorology (NCM), and the President of Regional Association II (Asia) will address the meeting, which will also be attended by: 35 member countries of RA II Asia Ambassador.

HE Dr Abdulla Al Mandous, Director General, National Center of Meteorology (NCM), said: “The RA II (Asia) Regional Meeting is to discuss our efforts to strengthen early warning systems in the region and improve resilience in the face of emerging weather and climate-related hazards. We believe that the outcomes and recommendations of this event will help strengthen cooperation among NMHSs, improve their ability to provide better and more timely weather, climate and hydrological services, and develop effective and coordinated disaster response plans to protect lives and livelihoods.”

Al Mandous added: “Hosting this regional event demonstrates the prominent role NCM plays in promoting national and regional capacity development, data exchange and research collaboration to develop more accurate and reliable weather forecasting models. Through cross-border cooperation, we aim to developing more effective and comprehensive strategies to mitigate the impacts of extreme weather events. This will ultimately improve our countries’ ability and preparedness to predict and respond to severe weather events, and reduce their impact on lives, livelihoods and property.”

From 14 to 16 March, the conference will include sessions covering technical issues and different components of early warning systems, infrastructure, and meteorological and hydrological services. Additionally, the RA II Research Forum will be held on the final day of the event.

At the end of the meeting, participants will deliver a high-level statement on the UN’s Early Warning for All initiative to implement climate adaptation action. The statement will commend the launch of the Action Plan for the Implementation of the Early Warning for All initiative announced during the last COP 27 and make recommendations to support the initiative.

As part of the ongoing global effort to address the impacts of climate change, the UN initiative Early Warning for All has recently gained significant momentum. His Excellency Dr Abdulla Al Mandous was appointed by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC) as the official candidate for the UAE WMO President, announcing that his campaign will focus on accelerating international coordinated Everyone is protected by an early warning system over the next five years”. To achieve this, Dr Al Mandous aims to implement the implementation action plan on Early Warning for All announced at COP 27, leading its implementation and ensuring that policy, technical and financial solutions are fast-tracked.
