Gilgit Baltistan [PoK]March 16 (ANI): In a bizarre turn of events, the Pakistani government on Wednesday removed Gilgit-Baltistan Police Inspector (IGP) Mohammad Saeed from his post in Gilgit-Baltistan ( GB) Charges opposed by police personnel Punjab police tried to arrest PTI chief Imran Khan from his Zaman Park residence in Lahore, Dawn reported.

The swift removal of the GB police chief came as a surprise, especially after the Punjab police chief denied any such confrontation took place.

According to a notice issued by the Institutional Department, “Mohammad Saeed, BS-21 Constable of the Pakistan Police, currently serving as Inspector General of Gilgit-Baltistan, has been reassigned and directed to report to the Institutional Department”.

Another notice stated, “Pursuant to Section 10 of the Civil Service Act, 1973, Ali Khan Khattak, Officer BS-20 of the Pakistan Police, who is currently serving in the Provincial Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has been reassigned and assumed the post of Gilgit – Inspector General of Baltistan.”

Earlier in the day, Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb claimed that “Gilgit-Baltistan forces” were used to attack Punjab police “who are trying to enforce a court order to detain Imran Khan”, Dawn reported.

Responding to PTI’s accusation that law enforcement officers fired on Imran Khan’s supporters who had gathered at Zaman Park, she said that the law enforcement officers deployed there were not armed.

Waving a copy of an arrest warrant against Imran, she claimed at least 65 police officers were injured trying to enforce court orders.

However, when Dawn sought to verify the Centre’s claims of clashes between Punjab and Gilgit-Baltistan police, the provincial police chief called the reports “baseless”.

Speaking to Dawn, Punjab IGP Usman Anwar said there were no clashes or confrontations with British police anywhere in Zaman Park, adding that British police did not point their guns at Lahore police personnel.

“GB police had left (returned) when Lahore police were engaged for this purpose,” the IGP said.

In his farewell to his force, the outgoing GB police chief said that during his two-year tenure, he had done his best to discharge his duties, addressing the problems of the Gilgit-Baltistan police and making necessary reforms.

If there were any deficiencies at the administrative level, “then I apologize for that,” Wazir said.

In a press conference, GB Information Minister Fatehullah Khan and Finance Minister Javed Ali Manwa refuted the government’s allegations that GB police were deployed in Zaman Park to protect Imran Khan. (Arnie)
