2023 Middle East Happiness Ranking: UAE, Israel Happiest, Lebanon Bottom

Lebanon Turkey is the happiest country in the Middle East, Israel and the Gulf states are the happiest, while Turkey’s happiness ranking continues to drop, according to a new edition of the World Happiness Report released this week.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network’s World Happiness Report 2023 ranks 137 countries on criteria including income, health and a sense of freedom to make important life decisions. The report shows that the Middle East and North Africa is the second-unhappiest region after sub-Saharan Africa, but a comparison of the rankings for 2022 and 2023 shows that several countries, including Israel, Iraq and Iran become happier.

Israel remains the happiest country in the region, climbing from ninth place to the fourth happiest country in the world.

While the Gulf states, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and regional powerhouse Saudi Arabia were the second happiest in the wider MENA region, all three countries were less happy over the past year, the rankings showed. Decreased.

The United Arab Emirates is the second happiest country in the Middle East and North Africa region, dropping two spots from 24th to 26th globally. The third happiest country, Saudi Arabia, dropped five places to 30th in the global ranking.

Iran, mired in anti-regime protests across the country, has also become happier over the past year, rising to 101st from 110th in the previous issue.

Tunisia also seemed happier than in the previous issue, rising from 120th to 110th.

Meanwhile, Turkey slips six places in the 2023 report, from No. 106 to No. 112 The happiest country in the world.

Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon are the happiest countries in the MENA region. However, Egypt and Jordan appear to be happier, moving up 8th and 11th respectively from the previous period.

Meanwhile, Lebanon and Afghanistan are the world’s happiest countries.

The Middle East and North African countries are ranked from highest to lowest happiness index as follows:

Bahrain: No. 42

Algeria: 81st

Iraq: 98th

Morocco: 100th

Iran: 101st

Turkey: 106th

Tunisia: 110th

Egypt: No. 121

Jordan: No. 123

Lebanon: 136th

The 2023 report does not rank Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Yemen, Syria or the Palestinian territories.

Globally, the Nordic countries occupy the top three spots, with Finland, Denmark and Iceland being the happiest countries in the world.
