UN Secretary-General Urges Contact with Taliban, Inclusive Afghan Government-News

[ad_1]

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres stated that dialogue with the Taliban is “absolutely necessary” because the United Nations wants this war-torn country to play a “constructive role” in international relations.

“We hope that the Afghan people live in peace; we hope that the Afghan people can stop the great suffering that existed in the past;” he said at a press conference before the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.

“We naturally hope that the Afghan government will become an inclusive government that represents different segments of the Afghan population; we hope that Afghanistan will never be a haven for terrorism; we want basic human rights, of course, I am particularly concerned about the rights of women and girls Respect; We hope that Afghanistan will play a constructive role in international relations. This is what we all want,” the head of the United Nations said in response to a question.

“Now,” he added, “the important thing is that, independent of different strategies and different forms of contact, all countries can communicate the same message and engage the Taliban in an effective way.

“As the United Nations, our choice is clear: we all know that the United Nations does not have the influence that others have, but the United Nations has been in Afghanistan since 47 years. The United Nations can play a key role in providing humanitarian assistance to people who are now desperate.

“Therefore, we decided that it is our responsibility to engage with the Taliban, to create conditions for effective humanitarian assistance, to reach all areas fairly, and to take into account our concerns for women and girls, for example, fighting the Taliban.

“This is why I sent Martin Griffiths (head of humanitarian affairs at the United Nations) to Kabul,” said the Secretary-General

Said, and added that he was the first person of that level in the world to go there to talk to Taliban leaders.

“We have been dealing with the Taliban, and we believe that the current dialogue with the Taliban is absolutely necessary.”

In response to a question about the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), which will be renewed next week, Guterres said that he believes that “under unpredictability, it is impossible to perform a new mission for UNAMA. Complete the new mission of UNAMA, and the new government in Kabul.

Guterres said: “I hope that the consensus will be technically updated in a short period of time, so as to have time to have a clearer understanding of the situation in Afghanistan and the role the United Nations should play.”

He said that he thinks it is wise to carry out technical rotation and have enough time to fully participate in order to be able to have a clearer view of the future. For different reasons.”

Although the decision to extend UNAMA’s mandate will be made by the Member States, Guterres stated that he hopes that “a short technical extension may be made so as to develop a more fully prepared new mission for UNAMA, and at the same time Consider the new reality.”
