As Ramadan begins, the country’s crackdown on beggars intensifies.

UAE prosecutors have reminded residents that begging is punishable.

In a video released earlier today, authorities said they would severely punish those begging for personal or material benefits.

According to Federal Decree No. 31 of 2021, any beggar who falls into the following categories will be severely punished:

  • not a determined person
  • have an obvious source of livelihood
  • Showing fake injuries
  • pretend to be doing service
  • deceive people in any way

Caught beggars face up to three months in jail and a fine of at least Dh5,000.
