Guwahati (Assam) [India]March 25 (ANI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Singapore High Commissioner Simon Wong jointly inaugurated the first Guwahati office of Singapore’s state-owned infrastructure consultancy Surbana Jurong on Saturday.

Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted: “This marks a major milestone in India’s Act East policy and will deepen cooperation between our two countries.”

In his speech, the Chief Minister expressed the hope that the corporate office of a Singapore company in Guwahati will become an important hub for the entire North East region.

Simon Wong, Singapore’s Special Envoy to India, said: “We are delighted that our first multinational company has set foot in Assam and is using it as a corporate office to work Singapore’s magic in the Northeast. We believe in Prime Minister Modi’s Go East policy , and hopes to support his efforts and his vision for the Northeast.”

“Excited to launch @SurbanaJurong’s regional office with CM @HimantaBiswa. Here is the first global engineering MNC. Singapore’s way of realizing Assam’s vision to become a regional hub. Many local employees – over 70 – testify here Emerging talent pool,” tweeted the Singapore High Commissioner.

Surbana Jurong is a global urban, infrastructure and management services consultancy involved in important projects such as the Guwahati-North Guwahati Link Bridge on the Brahmaputra River.

Dr Salma also said that the office has provided several young people from Assam with the opportunity to be employed in the office. He also expressed the hope that in the next few years, other multinational companies will also come to set up operations in the state.

Guwahati, an offshoot of Prime Minister Modi’s “Act East Policy”, has become a nerve center for trade and commerce, the chief minister said. Therefore, the establishment of the Surbana Jurong corporate office bodes well for the exchange of trade relations between the Northeast region and other ASEAN countries.

Assam is at the heart of India’s “Act East” policy, which aims to strengthen trade and people-to-people ties between India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

To support this growth, state governments are enhancing air, road, water, rail and internet connectivity, and working with the central government to launch direct flights between states and Asean cities.

Assam is the largest state in the North East Region (NER) of India and is rich in natural resources. Given its geographic location, wide international borders, and proximity to ASEAN, NER is at the center of India’s Act East policy. Assam has the potential to become a hub of economic activity for NER and a hub for trade with neighboring Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal (BBN).

“Great to be back in amazing Assam, reaffirming great relationship with CM @HimantaBiswa. Discussed how Singapore will contribute to his and PM @narendramodi’s vision for NER such as enhanced skills development and investment.- HC Wong,” Singapore tweeted from India. (Arnie)
