US, Japan, South Korean nuclear envoys meet after Pyongyang test | Military News

[ad_1]

The countries hope to restart the denuclearization negotiations that have been put on hold for two years.

Senior nuclear envoys from Japan, the United States and South Korea held talks in Tokyo on Tuesday to discuss North Korea’s missile and nuclear program. A day ago, Pyongyang said it had tested a new type of long-range cruise missile.

Analysts said that North Korea’s official media called this weapon a “strategic” weapon that may have nuclear capabilities.

“Recent developments in North Korea [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] Remind us of the importance of close communication and cooperation between the three countries,” Kim Sung, the U.S. special envoy for North Korea, said in his opening speech, using the initials of the country’s official name.

The three countries have been discussing how to break the deadlock with North Korea over nuclear and ballistic missile programs, which have already caused international sanctions.

When meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Fungo Takehiro and South Korean Foreign Minister Nuguid, Kim Jong-un stated that Washington is open to diplomacy to resolve the North Korean issue.

The White House stated that despite recent missile tests, the United States is still preparing to engage with Pyongyang.

The administration of U.S. President Joe Biden announced New method It told North Korea in May that it was still pursuing denuclearization, but was not prepared to offer any “big deal” to Pyongyang.

Officials said at the time that Biden’s policies would be calibrated and practical, and focused on diplomacy.

Negotiations on denuclearization have stalled since 2019, and North Korea has demanded that sanctions be lifted.

Pyongyang said it does not see any signs of policy change in Washington.

Although the United States is a close military and economic ally of Japan and South Korea, relations between neighboring countries in Asia are often strained by issues such as sovereignty disputes, Japan’s 1910-45 occupation of the Korean Peninsula and its wartime history.
