Dubai remains world’s busiest international airport

[ad_1]

Dubai International Airport (DXB) remains the busiest airport for international passengers in 2022, according to a report by Airports Council International (ACI).

The report reveals last year’s top 10 busiest airports by passenger, cargo and aircraft movements.

Dubai International Airport will attract 66 million passengers in 2022, a 127% increase from 2021. However, it is still 23.5% lower than the pre-pandemic (2019) figure.

London Heathrow came second with 58.2 million passengers and Amsterdam third with 52.4 million.

Commenting on the ranking, Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths said: “We are delighted to top the list of the world’s busiest international airports for the ninth year in a row, but considering the outstanding performance of Dubai International Airport (DXB) performance, which is not surprising given the performance throughout 2022 and the surge in traffic in the final quarter.

“Demand for air travel in 2022 will generally increase, but what will set DXB apart is the dedication of our employees and the meticulous planning and preparation of each of our service partners who make up Dubai’s amazing airport community.

“While we celebrate this achievement, our focus remains on continuing our efforts to keep DXB at the top of the list of busiest hubs, while also being recognized by global travelers as providing the best airport experience in the world,” he said.

The world’s top four airports (both domestic and international) remain unchanged from 2021. Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL) topped the list with 93.7 million (+23.8%), followed by Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) with 73.4 million (+17.5%) and Denver (DEN) with 69.3 million ( +17.8%) was third and Chicago O’Hare (ORD) was fourth with 68.3 million (+26.5%). Dubai ranks fifth.

Los Angeles (LAX) was sixth with 65.9 million (+37.3%) passengers, Istanbul (IST) seventh (64.2 million – +73.8%) and London Heathrow (LHR) eighth (61.6 million – +217.7 %), New Delhi (DEL) ninth (59.5 million +60.2%) and Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG) tenth (57.4 million – 119.4%).

Five of the top 10 airports in the world are in the United States. They all have a significant share of domestic passenger traffic (between 75% and 95% domestic passenger traffic).

The biggest jumper in the top 10 was London Heathrow, which climbed from 54th in 2021 to eighth after reopening borders after two years of closure.

Luis Felipe de Oliveira, Director General of ACI World, said: “The new top 10 busiest passenger airports reflect the resilience of airports and the aviation industry, and passengers’ desire to travel by air.

“While US airport hubs were able to recover more quickly due to their strong domestic market, we are now seeing global hubs join the upstream – including Dubai, Istanbul and London Heathrow.

“China is the second-largest aviation market after the United States, and its reopening is now expected to bring overall gains to domestic and international travel,” he said.

Air cargo volumes, meanwhile, are estimated to decline by 6.7% year-on-year (-1.7% compared to 2019), reaching nearly 117 million metric tons in 2022. – trade arab news agency
