When operating at full load, the unit will add another 1,400 MW of clean power to the grid
Two weeks after the reactor started, the second unit of the Baraka nuclear power plant has been successfully integrated into the UAE power grid.
The United Arab Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) announced on Tuesday that the second of the four units of the power plant has begun to provide the first megawatt of carbon-free electricity to businesses, schools and homes.
When operating at full capacity, the unit will add another 1,400 megawatts of clean power to the grid.
This milestone brings the UAE closer to half of its goal of supplying a quarter of the country’s electricity needs 24/7, while at the same time promoting the reduction of carbon emissions, which is the main cause of climate change.
“More efficient” connection
In August, the Baraka factory became The first multi-unit nuclear power plant in the UAE And in the Arab world.
During the grid connection period, the generator of Unit 2 was integrated and synchronized with the requirements of the UAE national transmission grid before commercial operation began.
As the integration and connection are completed, the nuclear operator of Unit 2 will begin a process of gradually increasing the power level of the reactor, which is called Power Boost Test (PAT).
Once the process is complete, Unit 2 will provide thousands of megawatts of clean baseload power in the coming decades.
The test will be conducted under the continuous supervision of FANR, the UAE’s independent nuclear regulatory agency, which has conducted more than 335 inspections since the beginning of the development of Barakah. This is in addition to the more than 42 missions and assessments of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO).
The knowledge and expertise accumulated by the Unit 1 operations team has been used to connect Unit 2 to the grid more effectively, reducing the time between startup and connection by 10%.
Steadily advancing
By providing sufficient clean electricity to millions of businesses and households through the Baraka plant, ENEC is leading the largest decarbonization effort in the region, as the plant is now the largest single source of clean electricity in the UAE and the Arab world.

It is located in the Al Dhafra area of Abu Dhabi and is one of the largest nuclear power plants in the world, with four APR-1400 units. The construction of the plant began in 2012 and has been advancing steadily.
Unit 1 now produces thousands of megawatts of clean electricity around the clock. Units 3 and 4 have completed 95% and 91% of the commissioning, respectively, and are in the final stage. The overall development of the Barakah plant is now over 96% complete.
When fully operational, the plant will generate 5.6 GW of free carbon power over the next 60 years.
