UAE to spend AED1.4 billion on projects affecting 102 million lives in 100 countries by 2022, says Mohamed

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, announced the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiative 2022 at a special ceremony in Dubai Year in Review Report of the Annual Results Opera.

Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum emphasized that MBRGI plays a vital role in building a culture of giving and generosity, promoting and expanding its impact locally, regionally and globally. “MBRGI’s achievements are the result of the institutional framework and collective efforts throughout the year, thanks to the dedication of its team and tens of thousands of volunteers, all of whom are working to realize the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid.

“The humanitarian campaign led by Mohammad bin Rashid is part of his leadership vision by emphasizing the importance of humanitarian efforts to future generations of the UAE community. The UAE will continue to reach out to those in need and be a Lighthouse,” he added.

Qualitative items

Mohammad Abdullah Al Gergawi, Secretary General of MBRGI, said: “The Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiative reached new heights in reaching 102 million people in 100 countries and truly reflects Sheikh Mohammed’s philosophy of humanitarian work based on qualitative, sustainable projects.
“Despite the global challenges, MBRGI continues to expand its scope and increase spending, which is evident as the foundation spends AED 300 million more in 2022 than in 2021, enabling us to improve education, jobs and healthcare lives of millions,” he added.

The ceremony included a brief summary of the “1 Billion Meals Donation” campaign, which launched the largest Ramadan sustainable food aid donation fund and mobilized local, regional and international efforts to help implement sustainable measures to combat and eradicate hunger.

In 2022, MBRGI managed to increase operational efficiency and optimize resources, increasing the number of beneficiaries and countries covered in just one year.

In addition to a team of 847 employees, MBRGI attracted 150,266 volunteers, a record in MBRGI history and an increase of 5,330 volunteers compared to 2021. Their contributions play a vital role in the implementation of multiple programs and activities across the Foundation’s five main pillars: Humanitarian Aid and Relief, Healthcare and Disease Control, Dissemination of Education and Knowledge, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and Empowerment Community.

Humanitarian Aid and Relief

In 2022, 30.2 million people will benefit from MBRGI’s initiatives and projects under this pillar, an increase of 7.3 million people compared to 2021. Spending on these projects has increased by AED 493 million compared to 2021, reaching AED 910 million in 2022.

Operating under this pillar are Humanitarian City International, UAE Food Bank, Mohammed bin Rashid Humanitarian and Charitable Foundation, Suqia and the Mohammed bin Rashid Global Giving Advisory Centre.

Together, these agencies have implemented food aid campaigns, winter coat support campaigns, emergency relief assistance for victims of war and natural disasters, school building projects, student support campaigns, housing projects for the poor, clean water projects, and donation initiatives.

Healthcare and Disease Control

MBRGI’s healthcare and disease control program, which is the cornerstone of its vision to fight infectious diseases and build healthy communities, is the foundation upon which healthy, productive humans can advance communities, spending AED 42.5 million during 2022, Benefiting 9.4 million people.

Institutions operating under this pillar are Noor Dubai and Al Jalila Foundation, both dedicated to improving healthcare, medical science and scientific research.

Their achievements in 2022 include the Al Jalila Foundation’s launch of the UAE’s first robotic biobank, which will open in 2023 and become a key local resource for research on genetic diseases, cancer, epidemics and other chronic diseases.

On the other hand, Noor Dubai continues to make a sustainable impact through prevention and education activities aimed at eliminating the causes of blindness and visual impairment in impoverished communities. Other projects by Noor Dubai include a national outreach program to help treat UAE residents with limited means and serious eye conditions, and mobile eye clinics to facilitate services to patients across the UAE. Through its Mass Drug Administration (MDA) programme, Noor Dubai delivered the antibiotic Zithromax to 9,142,612 people and trained 15,000 public health workers on anti-trachoma treatment options.

Reflecting MBRGI’s emphasis on education as a key driver of social progress, the number of beneficiaries of the Spreading Education and Knowledge program reached a record high of 55.1 million, an increase of 6.7 million from the number recorded in 2021. Total expenditure on knowledge and education projects amounted to AED 213 million.

To this end, MBRGI designs and implements various educational and knowledge programs regionally and globally to build the capabilities of everyone involved in the educational journey, from students to teachers and administrators. The foundation aims to build innovative e-learning platforms to keep pace with modern educational curricula and global technological developments.

Achievements in this area by 2022 include the launch of Dubai Cares’ report on ‘Rewiring Education for People and the Planet’ during the United Nations Transformative Education Summit, the launch of Madrasa Education Centers in seven countries, and the The community provided ample services, and Muhammad opened the Bin Rashid Library, the Muhammad Educational Center, a new cultural beacon that sparked a passion for learning. The library received over 300,000 visitors in 6 months.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship

This pillar, which is key to moving towards a knowledge-based economy and paving the way for the emergence of new industries, has spent a total of AED 128 million on various projects and initiatives, reaching 4.6 million people in 2022 and 2.9 million people.

Achievements in this regard include the launch of Concept Plus, a new business incubator for digital technology SMEs, the new edition of the Mohammed bin Rashid Global Water Prize, which encourages research institutions to develop new solutions to the challenge of clean water scarcity , more than 1 million participation in the Dubai Future Foundation’s Million Arab Programmers Program, and the opening of the Museum of the Future; a symbol of knowledge and global progress based in Dubai.

In its first year, the Museum of the Future welcomed more than 1 million visitors from 163 countries, as well as more than 1,000 international government officials and experts, including some 20 heads of state and official delegations.

The Mohammed Bin Rashid SME Development Agency continues to serve UAE entrepreneurs and start-ups, expanding its services to 3,126 entrepreneurs and 2,210 start-ups by 2022.

2.3 million people benefited from community empowerment projects and initiatives in 2022, compared to 2.1 in 2021, for a total expenditure of AED 95.1 million, an increase of AED 6.4 million compared to the previous year.

Institutions working under this pillar include Mohammed bin Rashid Academy of Government, Sheikh Mohammed Center for Cultural Understanding, Arab Media Forum, Arab Social Media Influencers Summit, Dubai International Sports Congress, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Awards, Arab Strategy Forum, Mohammed bin Rashid Center for Leadership Development and Arab Hope Makers.
