Abu Dhabi: United Arab Emirates (UAE) astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi took part in the Maleth research project aboard the International Space Station on Tuesday that will help experts develop drugs to treat type 2 diabetes.
The Dubai Media Office (DMO) tweeted a video in which Al Neyadi explained details of the Maleth project, which aims to develop a drug to treat type 2 diabetes, a collaborative effort between international entities, including Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center (MBRSC) in Dubai.
With this study, “scientists aim to improve the efficiency of treating diabetic foot ulcers and really make a difference in the lives of those affected by this disease,” Al Neyadi said.
Al Neyadi further stated that he is honored to support “interesting research experiments in the field of biomedical sciences and healthcare that utilize the space environment for research that is closely related to life on Earth”.
He emphasizes that diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects the way your body converts food into energy. Nearly 5 billion people worldwide live with diabetes, and this number is expected to increase in the coming years.
Al-Neyadi tweeted his thanks for participating in the research project.
“I’m proud to be running a trial in Project Maleth, which will advance precision medicine in type 2 diabetes,” he said on Twitter.
“🇲🇹🇺🇸🇬🇧🇧🇪🇸🇦🇦🇪By joining forces with global research partners and collaborators, we are using the unique conditions of space to push the boundaries of knowledge. More than 500 million people worldwide live with diabetes, and together we are work hard to provide them with better treatment options.”
Maleth’s projects are primarily focused on obtaining results that will facilitate and improve precision medicine for more effective treatment of diabetic foot ulcers (DFU).
Joseph Borg, Maleth’s program coordinator, tweeted: “Dear Sultan, as Maleth’s program coordinator, it’s an honor to see you tackle and collaborate on such an important situation for #space. What you hold in your hands – Not just patient samples, but the passion, perseverance and heart of a real scientist.”
