Port Louis [Mauritius]April 14 (ANI): Indian Foreign Minister Vinay Mohan Kwatra met Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jagnauth at the new Treasury building in the capital Port Louis on Thursday. He was accompanied by K. Nandini Singla, the High Commissioner of India in Mauritius, Le Matinal reported.

In a statement after the meeting, Kwatra stressed that this was his first official visit to Mauritius. He commended Prime Minister Jugnauth for his sense of leadership and guidance on the overall scope and direction of India-Mauritius relations.

India’s foreign minister said discussions focused on partnerships between the two countries and avenues for future development projects that India and Mauritius could undertake, Le Martinar reported.

He recalled that several people-centred development projects had been implemented, such as the Metro Express project, hospital construction and the Supreme Court.

Vinay Kwatra said the impetus to take the partnership to new heights in new areas of collaboration was also discussed. As reported by Le Matinal, he mentioned areas such as financial technology, infrastructure development, capacity building and how to tackle challenges together.

Vinay Mohan Kwatra is India’s 34th Foreign Minister. He has served in various capacities in many Indian missions abroad and at home. He obtained a degree in International Relations in 1992 from the Geneva Graduate School.

A career diplomat, Kwatra will become India’s new foreign minister on May 1, 2022.

Previously, he served as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India and the Office of the Prime Minister of India. He also served as Secretary of Commerce at the Indian Embassy in Washington DC from May 2010 to July 2013.

From July 2013 to October 2015, he served as Director-General of the Department of Policy Planning and Research of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and later served as Director-General of the Department of Americas of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, handling India’s relations with the United States and Canada.

He joined the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1988 and served as Third Secretary and then Second Secretary at the Permanent Mission of India in Geneva until 1993 where he dealt with work related to the UN Specialized Agencies and the Commission on Human Rights.

He then worked as an officer-in-charge at Headquarters, coordinating with the United Nations, before finding positions in the diplomatic missions of South Africa and Uzbekistan between 1993 and 2003.

Then, from 2003 to 2006, he worked at the Indian Embassy in Beijing, China as Counselor and later as Deputy Chief of Mission. (Arnie)
