JOHANNESBURG, April 19 (PTI) — The South African unit of India-based multinational IT firm Zensar Technologies has been praised for assisting the country in tackling skills shortages as it marks the 1,000th local youth for an internship.

Launched in 2008, the main objective of the program is to provide local youth with training and preparation in the latest ICT skills. World-class trainers from India and South Africa teach them international technical skills in automation, cloud computing and software testing.

“It’s heartening to see a company like Zensar taking the lead in bringing value to the youth of this country. Kumar said that Indian companies investing in South Africa all support the Indian government’s initiative to develop local sustainable development skills, rather than just developing their own resources like some other countries.

Indian businesses in South Africa are taking a multi-dimensional approach based on local conditions and with an eye toward long-term growth in the African country, Kumar said.

“India’s investments in different sectors of the South African economy have created thousands of local jobs, wealth and economic opportunities for local businesses. Indian businesses have contributed to building local capabilities,” Kumar said, lauding Zensar’s pioneering initiative .

“The success of the interns reflects Zensar’s commitment to fostering a culture of excellence, growth and opportunity for South African youth. I think South Africa is ready for great things. Use local talent globally,” said Zensar CEO and Managing Director Manish Tandon, who flew in from the US for the event.

Commenting on the milestone, Harish Lala, Senior Vice President and Head of Africa at Zensar Technologies, said that since its founding more than two decades ago, one of the company’s key areas of focus in South Africa has been bringing global expertise and knowledge to the local community , as well as investing in and building IT and digital skills in the country.

“As a company from India, we have a responsibility to bring together our partners (including many major South African companies) and IT departments from India to add value to young employees who have completed the programme.

“We are very proud when we see these graduates go on to become senior professionals in their careers and add value to our programs,” Lara said.

Zensar has been present in South Africa since 2001, with operations in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. The company was recently awarded South Africa’s Top Employer Award 2023 for the second year in a row.

“For India and South Africa, you are becoming part of what I call the ‘human bridge’ between our two great nations. Time spent in India will prepare you to represent South Africa in India and India in South Africa.

“You will be advocates of India-South friendship and our ambassadors in global forums,” Kumar told the latest batch of interns who will travel to India from South African insurance giant Old Mutual.

“Your country is a regional hub and supply base for other African countries. That means, there are a lot of opportunities,” says Kumar, highlighting how South Africa’s services sector suffers from skills shortages in several IT-related areas.
