A coherent plan focused on strengthening San Jose’s entertainment district could be the key to creating a more vibrant downtown that has been hit hard by the pandemic and is still struggling to recover. One local developer believes having a team dedicated to the task could make San Jose one of the top entertainment destinations on the West Coast. “Achieving this goal was relatively straightforward. What was required was a centralized organization with the vision and expertise to attract and accommodate extraordinary talent,” Gary Dillabough told Mercury News.
Dillabough is co-founder and CEO of Urban Community, a real estate and investment firm that supports numerous developments focused on strengthening San Jose’s downtown core. Big-name entertainers have been ditching San Jose for venues in other Bay Area cities, he said. “We should be able to beat venues like Mountain Winery (in Saratoga), Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, San Francisco, Coachella and Bottlerock,” he said. Dillabough believes that creating a team like Team San Jose to manage the convention center and other venues could help attract talent and fill venues by elevating the downtown area into a vibrant entertainment district.
San Jose has the 10th largest population in the United States, a pleasant climate and is home to some of the world’s most influential companies, which are some of the reasons it has become a major destination for sports, festivals, concerts and performances. However, San Jose isn’t necessarily known for entertainment. “Groups like the San Jose Sports Authority, the SAP Center, and the San Jose Sharks have been building a strong foundation for the entertainment district. We have one of the best performing improv acts in the country, and one of the more cutting-edge and innovative operas.” San Jose Jazz The festival was a fantastic event,” Dirab told Mercury News.
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan seemed to agree that more needs to be done to create a more entertainment-focused city, telling the Mercury News, “People want a predictable environment. Every time a resident or visitor comes to our city Center, there should be at least one really fun thing to do that day — a show 365 days a year.” So far, there are no concrete plans to create a city-sanctioned group focused on or promoting the entertainment district, But the mayor seemed to agree that the possibility seemed realistic, especially as downtown areas struggled to make it happen. Get rid of the epidemic in an all-round way.
