MEXICO CITY, April 24 (AP) — Mexico’s president suspended his visit to the Yucatan Peninsula on Sunday after acknowledging that he had tested positive for the cornea virus after having contracted COVID-19 twice before.
“It’s not serious,” President Andrés Manuel López Obrador wrote on his social media account.
It follows local media reports that López Obrador felt dizzy Sunday morning and had to cancel his trip, a claim his presidential spokesman denied.
López Obrador, 69, who admitted to a history of heart problems, wrote that he would be quarantined in Mexico City “for a few days.”

“I’m 100% happy because I had to put my tour on hold and I’ll be in Mexico City celebrating (his son) Jesús Ernesto’s 16th birthday, albeit far away,” he wrote.
López Obrador contracted COVID-19 in early 2021 and recovered after receiving an experimental treatment he described at the time. In January 2022, amid a spike in coronavirus infections in Mexico, he announced a second infection with COVID-19.
López Obrador has resisted enacting a mandatory mask order, refusing to wear one even at the height of the pandemic unless absolutely necessary, such as on airline flights. He is known to refuse to use Mexico’s presidential plane, which he recently announced had been sold to Tajikistan.
Presidential spokesman Jesús Ramirez did not immediately respond to a question about whether the president would return to Mexico City on a commercial flight.
While he remains in quarantine, Interior Secretary Adan Augusto López will attend the daily presidential morning news conference, the president said.
That could boost the interior minister’s flagging campaign to win López Obrador’s Morena party’s 2024 presidential nomination. Lopez, who is not related to the president, is currently trailing Mexico City Mayor Claudia Simbaum in most polls in the primary. (Associated Press)
