The Australian has paid tribute to Barry Humphries, the comedian best known for his role as Sir Edna Everridge, as both a “one-of-a-kind” entertainer as well as charming and intelligent.
The Sydney Morning Herald said Humphreys died on Saturday at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, where he was being treated for various health problems. Humphreys was 89 years old.
Born and raised in Melbourne, Humphreys rose to fame in the UK in the 1970s playing a string of Australian comic characters including Lady Edna, obnoxiously drunk diplomat Les Patterson and Sandy Stone, an aging rambling old man.
St Vincent’s Hospital vicar Martin Maunsell said he met Humphries when he was being treated for a fall, and described him as “charming” and “intelligent”.
“He’s unique,” Maunsell said. “I don’t think we’ll ever see anyone like him in Australia again.”
In the seaside suburb of Coogee, Sydney resident Dani Kersh said Humphreys was like “a ray of sunshine”.
“He provided a ton of comedy, humor and entertainment all over Australia. What a legend,” Kersh said.
Another Sydneysider, Lucy Bloom, said it felt like Lady Edna’s role would never end.
“Lady Edna is a character that you wish to live on forever, so I was really, really shocked when I saw that we didn’t have a Lady Edna anymore,” Bloom said. San Francisco met her, and I’ll never forget it.”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese led local mourning for Humphreys after his death, describing him as a “great intellect, satirist, writer and absolutely unique”.
“Barry Humphreys entertains us with an array of characters, from Lady Edna to Sandy Stone. But the brightest star in that galaxy is always Barry,” Albanese tweeted.
