The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced today (April 23) that the number of riders on the Dubai Metro has surpassed two billion since it first opened to the public on September 9, 2009.

The RTA statement said the Metro’s Red Line carried 1.342 billion commuters, while the Green Line served 673.531 million commuters.

Additionally, Dubai Metro has consistently maintained an on-time performance of 99.7%, exceeding international safety standards and demonstrating excellent operational efficiency. It said the continued development and success of Dubai Metro is a testament to Dubai’s commitment to providing commuters with safe and reliable transport services.

The average daily ridership of Dubai Metro in 2022 will exceed 616,000, showing that the RTA’s efforts to increase public transport usage are succeeding.

This achievement also reflects a positive shift in the community’s perception of public transportation, as they have recognized the benefits of smoother traffic and reduced fuel and vehicle maintenance costs.

In addition to simplifying the mobility of residents and tourists across the emirate, Dubai Metro will also help strengthen Dubai’s competitiveness in hosting global events.

These include the successful hosting of Expo 2020 Dubai, which includes the construction of the 15-kilometre Route 2020 linking seven stations. In addition, the Metro has played a vital role in stimulating Dubai’s economic growth and boosting tourism, and the value of real estate near Metro stations has also appreciated by 12%.

Announcing the news, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, said: “Dubai’s ability to build a world-class transport network is a The result of the vision of His Highness bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, as a model city for the city of the future, Dubai has invested in multiple infrastructure projects with the highest international standards and operational efficiency, to ensure the best possible service.”

He commended the RTA for its efforts to implement quality projects that cater to the mobility needs of the community.

“Dubai Metro has become the backbone of the transport system connecting all major regions of the emirate, ensuring passengers travel safely and smoothly,” he added.

Mattar Al Tayer, RTA Director General and Chairman, said: “Statistics show that ridership on the Dubai Metro has continued to rise since the service opened in September 2009. “Dubai Metro ridership continued to grow steadily, reaching 204.405 million in 2018 and 202.978 million in 2019. However, in 2020, when the world was hit by the pandemic, metro ridership fell to 113.626 million as a result of lockdowns and precautionary measures. Take that year,” Al Tayer said.
