Nasir Nasrallah: The Poetics of the Machine
Nasir Nasrallah’s new solo exhibition at 421 titled “The Poetics of Machines” will open in Gallery 1 from May 18 to August 27, presenting a mysterious exploration of the relationship between man and machine. Through an intricate series of drawings, paintings, publications, textiles and installations, the Emirati artist takes us on a journey into a world of mechanical beings existing in an unknown time and space, inspired by early Islamic inventions and experiments.

Drawings and paintings are highly detailed and depict a variety of unique robotic figures. They usually appear in groups, suggesting a kind of machine community or society.
The exhibition acts as a stage or set in which to stage an impromptu narrative that examines how this community of machines talks, communicates and interacts, exploring the potential for life in so-called inanimate matter and vice versa. The work invites us to consider the impact of machines on our daily lives and our evolving relationship with these mechanical beings.
Nasrallah’s descriptions of machines are not just mechanical; instead, he imbues them with personality, emotion, and even a sense of humor. In one of his installations, for example, visitors walking through the exhibition are presented with a fax machine that receives messages in real time and a sofa setup that replicates Nasrallah’s personal studio. These elements create a sense of familiarity and intimacy, inviting visitors into the artist’s personal world.
Nasrallah is the recipient of the 2023 cycle of the 421 Arts Development Program. “Machine Poetics” is the result of this project, which is organized in cooperation with the teaching partner Academy of Emerging Arts.

Mahshid Rafiei: Fabulous proportions
The first solo exhibition featuring Mahshid Rafiei’s work “Of Mythic Proportions” will run until May 8, 2023,
is a large-scale installation of five newly commissioned works. The installation, which occupies the entire space of Gallery 1, demonstrates that illusion is not the opposite of truth, but an accomplice, leading us into a lost world.
“Fabulous Proportion” includes sculptural and sound works, elements of which are intentionally hidden to provide a deceptive reading, and asks us to consider how art can provide substitutes for what may be missing.
Through this play on illusion and perception, Rafiei explores the aesthetic process of origin myths and their protection. One of Mahshid Rafiei’s inspirations for this exhibition was a poem by a 19th-century Bedouin woman. To ease the grief of a female camel in her flock that has lost a calf, she inflates the skin of the dead baby’s dead baby to convince the female camel that she is still alive.
This exhibition is the result of the 421 Art Development Exhibition Programme, organized in collaboration with teaching partner Emerging Arts Academy.
